Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level; they are God’s emissaries for keeping order. It is God’s will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you’re a danger to society. Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.
This is a question that I have been asking myself today when I read this verse.
I know allot of people, christian people, who try to hide things from the government, cheat on their taxes, hire people and pay them under the table……..and the question I have is how is that honoring those in authority over us? I have been tempted to hide things so that I don’t have to pay so much in taxes……….but I am realising that along with honoring God with my body I need to honor God by being honest when I pay my taxes…..God cannot bless me if I don’t! When we don’t submit ourselves to those in authority over us it robs us of blessings that God wants to pour on us.
This is what Romans 13 says about it……..these verses use even stronger language!
2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
I don’t know about you but this has really hit home for me today……….I know this is a contriversial subject but God’s word says it pretty clearly! We will bring judgement on ourselves when we don’t submit ourself to the authority God places over us.
Even if we feel the government is corrupt, God still has placed these people in authority over us!
Verse one in Romans 13 says this
1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
So that just about says it all…… God wants us to share every part of our life with Him! Including trusting Him with our taxes…..now that’s a twist I wasn’t expecting!
